Although Alexandria (together with Pineville on the other side of the Red River) was almost completely destroyed by Union forces during the Civil War, it saw a rebirth as a hub of the rail and lumber industries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Downtown, you'll also find the magnificent stained-glass windows of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral (1896) and the Alexandria Museum of Art which contains a large collection of Louisiana folk art, as well as fine art of the 20th century. The Arna Bontemps African-American Museum and Cultural Arts Center is in the former home of noted author and poet of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1930s. You can also visit the Kent Plantation House, a restored French colonial-style house with outbuildings including slave cabins, carriage house, and sugar mill. The Loyd Hall Plantation in nearby Cheneyville is also open for tours. At the Alexandria Zoo, you'll find more than 500 animals, including gibbons, jaguars, and condors. Kisatchie National Forest provides myriad opportunities for outdoor recreation.
