The Cajun way of life -- its music and food, its crafts and traditions -- hold sway in Houma. While touring the Terrebonne Parish swamps and bayous, you can see demonstrations of such colorful activities as Cajun fishing, cooking, pirogue building, net making, and alligator skinning. You can choose among several boat tours that will let you see abundant wildlife such as herons and pelicans, racoons and nutria, and, of course, living alligators gliding from shore into the murky waters below your boat. At Southdown Plantation House/Terrebonne Museum, you'll find original furnishings and historical displays at this Greek Revival mansion (1859) that was transformed into a Queen Anne mansion by the owner's son (1893). A few miles north, you can visit Oak Alley Plantation, with its stunning rows of living oak trees that lead to the levee of the Mississippi River. Another popular attraction here is the Bayou Terrebone Water Life Museum.
