This deepwater port with access to the Gulf of Mexico via the Calcasieu River grew as a lumbering center in the late 19th century. Its importance as a center of Cajun culture is celebrated each year during the annual Contraband Days Pirate Festival, a two-week festival held in May. You'll find a recreated pharmacy, bedroom, barber shop and country store among the 19th-century rooms at the Imperial Calcasieu Museum. Walking tours of the historic Charpentier District will take you past Victorian-era homes and buildings.
