The commercial and cultural center for this corner of the state, Monroe is the home of University of Louisiana at Monroe. Campus features include the Museum of Natural History, the Bry Hall Art Gallery, and the Zoological Museum which is noted for its extensive fish collection. Living animals, more than 850 of them, formal gardens, and lagoons can be seen at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo.
You can also visit the Masur Museum of Art and the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Foundation which includes the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens, with its collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia, the Bible Museum of rare books, and the Elsong Gardens and Conservatory. A recent attraction is the Black Bason Wildlife Preserve and Aquarium.
