The oldest town in the Louisiana Purchase Territory, it is the starting point of the historic "Spanish Trail" (LA 6) which led to Mexico City. Scores of Creole and antebellum homes and churches may be found in town along the Cane River. Magnolia and Melrose plantations, and Kate Chopin House are open for tours. Ducournau Square is a restored Colonial structure with shops. The reconstructed 1732 Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site is nearby.
