Rosedown, a handsome plantation built in 1835, has been beautifully restored and is open to the public. Its great gardens vary in bloom all year. Among other fine mansions in the vicinity are The Myrtles Plantation, near town, with its fine antiques and its own special ghost story; Catalpa Plantation (by appointment only), whose owner is descended from George Washington's wife; the Cottage Plantation (1796), north on US 61, a rambling house with a long front gallery; Butler Greenwood, now reconstructed; and Oakley Plantation, where John James Audubon stayed. He painted 32 of his finest "Birds of America" series while living in these Feliciana parishes of Louisiana. The plantation is now the Audubon State Historic Site.
