Emmeline Labiche, known to Longfellow's readers as Evangeline, came ashore from Bayou Teche beneath an ancient oak to meet Louis Arceneaux, called Gabriel by the poet, only to find that he had married someone else. Emmeline's grave is in the village churchyard. The Acadian House Museum, housed in an early 19th-century dwelling, stands in Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site, north of town. At the time of the French Revolution, St. Martinville received a second wave of refugees. Royalists flocked to the village, and while their jewels and cash lasted, the social life included such gala balls and operas that the town was called "Le Petit Paris."
