The communities of Shreveport and Bossier City are separated by the Red River. Though Shreveport and Bossier City are independent localities, they are considered one metropolitan area. Interstate 20 runs east-west through Shreveport and Bossier City. Highway 80 is another east-west road through the metropolitan area, if you do not mind passing through residential areas. Interstate 49 runs north-south through downtown Shreveport, connecting with Interstate 20 to the north of the city and intersecting Interstate 220, called the Innerloop, at Shreveport's southern border. Interstate 49 links downtown Shreveport to Southern Louisiana. I-220 travels around Shreveport west from I-49, crosses I-20 and curves northeast around Shreveport and Bossier City until it connects with I-20 east of Bossier City.

Two blocks off of I-49, historic Line Avenue, a busy thoroughfare, runs north-south. Be aware of major one-way streets in downtown Shreveport. Market Street runs one-way south while Spring Street runs one-way north. Metered street parking, parking garages, and free parking along the river are available.
