Named for steamboat captain Henry Miller Shreve, Shreveport is the commercial and cultural center for Ark-La-Tex, a 200 mile region formed by the junction of Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana. The entertainment district along the Red River offers museums, riverboat gambling, and street festivals. The Texas Street Bridge connecting the city to Bossier is a nighttime neon experience.

Attractions

The R.W. Norton Art Gallery offers works by Russell and Remington among many other well-known European and American artists. Forty acres of azaleas grace the museum's extensive grounds. Art from contemporary practitioners is offered in a horticultural setting at the Barnwell Memorial Gardens and Art Center on the downtown riverfront. Palms and bromeliads are included among the featured foliage in the conservatory. A fragrance garden for the visually impaired is offered in the adjacent RiverView Park.

Interactive science exhibits, a state-of-the-art planetarium and a domed theater for showing large-format movies are offered at the Sci-Port Discovery Center. Dioramas in the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum highlight the state's history, culture, products and natural resources. Also visit the Ark-La-Tex Antique & Classic Vehicle Museum located in an original 1927 Graham Truck/Dodge Car showroom. Family excitement awaits at Water Town USA with its multiple water slides, adventure pools, and stone waterfall.

Across the Red River, Shreveport's sister riverport Bossier City is home to the Eighth Air Force Museum and the Ark-La-Tex Mardi Gras Museum. The Touchstone Wildlife & Art Museum, featuring dioramas, Indian artifacts, and mounted specimens, is a few miles east in Haughton.

Culture mavens will find no end of entertainment in Shreveport. Just head to the Civic Theatre for performances by the city's symphony, ballet and opera companies. Top touring Broadway productions are offered at the historic Strand Theatre. Sports fans can go to the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City for action by the Battle Wings of Arena Football 2 or the Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League. Thoroughbred horse racing takes place at Louisiana Downs.

A few minutes west of the city, the American Rose Center serves as the research center for the American Rose Society. The gardens here are brimming with more than 20,000 fragrant rose bushes, azaleas, and other flowering plants.
