Administered by the National Park Service, Boston's famous Freedom Trail winds for two-and-a-half miles past the city's historic buildings and monuments. Pick up a map for this self-guided walking tour at the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau Visitor Information Booth on Boston Common near the entrance to the Park Street "T" station, then follow the map, aided by a painted red line that marks the route, to historic sites such as the Old Granary Burying Ground, Paul Revere House, and the Old North Church. The trail continues across the Charles River in Charlestown, and ends at Bunker Hill. There is no charge to walk the Freedom Trail, but some of the historic locations along the route may ask a donation or small admission fee.

Boston by Foot offers daily guided walking tours from May to October. Trained volunteers lead participants on various walks, including Freedom Trail, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, the North End, or underground Boston (Sunday's popular tour destination). Tours typically last 90 minutes. Call 617-367-2345 or 617-367-3766 for information. Reservations are not necessary.

Trolley Tours are an entertaining and informative way to see the sights of Boston. The vehicles make a number of stops, and ticket-holders can disembark and return to the tour as often as they wish. Several companies operate these narrated tours. Call Beantown Trolley (617-236-2148), Minute Man Trolley (617-876-5539), or Old Town Trolley (617-269-7150) for more information. Old Town Trolley also operates a trolley tour of Cambridge.

Boston Harbor Cruises is one of several companies that offer tours of Boston Harbor and beyond. With more than 20 narrated tours a day in season (April through October), you're sure to find something of interest. Tours of 45 and 90 minutes leave from 1 Long Wharf, close to the Aquarium "T" stop. (617-227-4321)

Take to the streets and the water in an amphibious vehicle on the Boston Duck Tour. Hop aboard a vintage-World-War-II "duck" to cruise both the streets of Boston and the Charles River. Narrated tours are offered daily from April through October; tickets may be purchased at 101 Huntington Avenue (the Prudential Center) beginning at 9 am.

A tour of the Samuel Adams Brewery includes a visit to the Boston Beer Museum and a sampling of the brewery's wares. Drop by the Boston Beer Company (30 Germania Street, Jamaica Plain) at 2 pm on Thursday or Friday, or noon, 1pm and 2 pm on Saturday, for a 90-minute-guided tour. The requested $1 donation goes to local charities. (617-368-5080)
