Harvard University, oldest university in America (1636), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology share Cambridge. Walk the tree-shaded "Yard'' at Harvard to see Massachusetts Hall (1720). Houghton Library is built to protect rare books from humidity and temperature changes. Fogg Art Museum is renowned for its European art (Middle Ages to present), Sackler Museum has ancient and Oriental art, and Busch-Reisinger Museum contains German sculpture and paintings. Greatest of the Harvard museums are probably the University Natural History Museums, with exhibits ranging from geology and botany to archaeology and ethnology, and exquisite glass flowers.
Not far from the Harvard campus is Longfellow National Historic Site, a lovely mansion where the poet lived while he was a Harvard professor. His books and manuscripts are on display. Among the beautiful buildings at M.I.T. are the chapel and the Kresge Auditorium, both the work of architect Eero Saarinen. Cambridge is also the home of Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, formerly Radcliffe College, at Harvard. Visit Hooper/Lee/Nichols House (1730s).
