Once a scene of fierce battles and bloody massacres, the beautifully preserved town of Deerfield is today a serene evocation of an earlier time in America. Along "the street", you'll find the village's mile-long collection of 50 well-maintained 18th- and early 19th-century homes and buildings, 13 of which are open to the public. Among them, you can visit the Barnard Tavern, Dwight House (1754), which includes a period doctor's office, and Stebbins House (1810), with its exceptionally fine furnishings. Memorial Hall Museum, housed in the 1799 building that became Deerfield Academy, contains a fine collection of colonial, Indian and military replicas. A few miles away, in South Deerfield, you can watch craftsmen using traditional methods and 200-year-old equipment to make candles at the Yankee Candle-Making Museum.
