Bronson Alcott and other leaders of the Transcendentalist movement attempted an experiment in communal living here in the mid-19th century. Earlier, Harvard was the home of a colony of the Shaker Society. You can see the evidence of these idealistic enterprises at the Fruitlands Museums, a complex of six buildings, including Fruitlands, an 18th-century farmhouse; the Shaker House; and the Picture Gallery, with paintings by early American and Hudson River School artists.
