The troubled industrial history of this former mill town at the confluence of the Merrimack and Concord rivers is brought to vivid life at the Lowell National Historical Park. Many of the mills, canals, and early housing of the textile era have been preserved and restored. Trolley and canal trips are also available. Be sure to see both the Boott Cotton Mills Museum and the Working People Exhibit housed in a former Boott Mill boardinghouse.
You can also visit the Whistler House Museum of Art, birthplace of the painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler, with a display of artwork by Whistler and other Americans. The fine New England Quilt Museum presents both contemporary and historic quilts.
