Jonathan Corwin, one of the witchcraft judges, held his hearings right at his home. The trials took place at the courthouse. Salem outgrew the witch hunts to become one of the great maritime cities of early America. Salem Maritime National Historic Site is located at Derby Wharf, where ships unloaded the merchandise of China and East India. Custom House and Derby House are nearby. Adjacent is Pickering Wharf residential/commercial village, a complex of shops, restaurants, and a marina. Peabody Essex Museum's premier international collections of art and culture include maritime art and history, Asian export art, American art, and architecture and objects from global cultures. The museum includes a major research library, period gardens, and historic house tours. Visit Stephen Phillips Memorial Trust House, noted for authentic Early American and English furnishings. Chestnut Street is considered one of the finest streets in America, architecturally. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem. The "House of Seven Gables'' (1668) was immortalized in his novel by the same name. Visit the Witch Dungeon, Witch History, Salem Witch, and New England Pirate museums, as well as the Salem Wax Museum of Witches & Seafarers. Take a harbor tour or, in season, a whale-watching tour.
