Established in 1785, this town at the foot of the Catoctin Mountains was named for Samuel Emmitt who had purchased the surrounding land some 30 years earlier. You can visit the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. The shrine and museum on the grounds of St. Joseph's Provincial House contain mementos and the remains of Mother Seton, who founded the Sisters of Charity in the early 19th century.
Nearby, at the entrance to Mount St. Mary's College, you'll find the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes, a replica of the shrine in France that was established here in 1805.
