Founded in 1634 as the first capital of Maryland, the land where St. Mary's City stood reverted to agricultural use when the state capital moved to Annapolis. Archaeological exploration of the little-disturbed site has led to the creation of an 800-acre living history museum. Highlights of Historic St. Mary's City include a replica of the State House of 1676, the reconstructed Maryland Dove0 sailing ship, a 17th-century tobacco plantation, an Indian village, an inn, and numerous working dig sites. A 10-week summer field school offers participants the opportunity to view the working site. Costumed interpreters re-enact colonial life. During Tidewater Archaeology Weekend, visitors can participate in dig activity. Nearby, Point Lookout State Park, at the tip of the point where the Potomac River meets the Chesapeake Bay, offers a Civil War museum, beaches, woods, a fishing pier, hiking, camping, and other outdoor recreation.
