Towson originated as a tavern built at a crossroads by Ezekiel Towson in 1768. The village that grew from these humble origins has evolved into the seat of Baltimore County and the home of Towson State University. At Hampton National Historic Site, you can tour the Georgian mansion (1790) built by Charles Ridgely and its 62-acre grounds with formal gardens as well as greenhouses, stables, an icehouse, and slave quarters among its outbuildings. Cloisters Mansion is another spot to visit.
Three vineyards are in the area, including Boordy (410-592-5015) in nearby Hydes; it is the largest vineyard in the state. Woodhall Wine Cellar (410-357-8644) is located in Parkton, and Basignani Winery (410-472-0703) is in Sparks.
Hunt Valley, near Towson, has thoroughbred racing horse breeding farms. You'll find hand-drawn, horse-drawn and motor-driven fire equipment dating from 1822 at the Fire Museum of Maryland in nearby Lutherville. Gunpowder Falls State Park provides opportunities for hiking, swimming, picnicking, and other outdoors recreation.
