Hagerstown, like other Maryland towns, has its share of Civil War history and pretty, hilly surroundings. The town rests in the Great Valley, just northeast of Virginia's Shenandoah.
Rose Hill Cemetery is the resting spot for 2,000 Confederate Soldiers who died during the battles of Antietam, South Mountain, Gettysburg, and Hagerstown. The town had divided loyalties; sentiments may have changed, however, in 1864 when Confederate forces ransomed the town for $20,000. The three banks that produced the sum still exist, but with different names. Their quick action saved the town from being burnt to the ground.
Walking tours of the city are available; Hagerstown's historic downtown district and South Prospect Street feature interesting architecture. Listed on the National Registry, the South Prospect area has been a neighborhood for more than two centuries.
The town offers plenty of opportunities to explore its past. Railroad's boom time comes to life at the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum. One-room Beaver Creek School is now a museum. It includes a hat shop, music shop, and a dressmaker's parlor; open from June through September.
Several theaters and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra make their home here, too. Hagerstown City Park holds the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts as well as Hager House (1739) and its gardens. The house is a look at Hagerstown's German and Amish heritage. Saturdays, one of the country's oldest Farmers Markets offers fresh produce near City Hall, as it has been doing since 1791.
Hagerstown Suns, the San Francisco Giants' Class A baseball league plays at Municipal Stadium. The Hagerstown Speedway, just west of town, holds racing events on weekends, February through October. Self-guided tours are available year-round at Albert Powell Trout Hatchery.
The outlet mall here is popular, too.
