Once the nation's fourth-largest seaport, this city at the mouth of the Kennebec River is home to the mammoth Naval shipyard at Bath Iron Works. Bath's 260-year history as a shipbuilding center is preserved at the Maine Maritime Museum. On the 20-acre museum grounds, you can visit the restored Percy & Small Shipyard, dating from the late 19th century, the museum's boatshop, where the craft of wooden boatbuilding is still practiced, and an active fishing schooner. Exhibits range from techniques of early fishing and navigation to ship models and the salvage of shipwrecks. Several excursions around the bay and up the coast also available, and snacks or lunch are available in the museum's Long Reach Hall, which overlooks the Kennebec. Fine older homes of ship captains and merchants can be seen in the city's historic district. Also contact: Main Street Bath, Maine Inc., 4 Center St., Bath, ME 04530, Tel: 207-442-7291, for more town information.
