Once a center of shipbuilding and milling, Kennebunk is full of fine old homes of the 19th century. Among its most famous are the "Wedding Cake House," an intricately carved structure created by ship's carpenter George Bourne in 1826, and the Taylor-Barry House (1803). You can also visit the Brick Store Museum for exhibits of historical, fine, and decorative arts. Nearby, at the Seashore Trolley Museum, you can see over 200 beautifully restored trolley cars from all over the world and take a narrated four-mile trolley ride; rides are available year-round. Get a parking permit at the Town Office and head to the Kennebunk Beaches (Gooch's, Middle, and Mother's) to splash in the surf and tidal pools and see the colorful Victorian cottages and boarding houses lining the street behind the beach.
