In 1777, John Paul Jones sailed the new Ranger0 from this famous shipbuilding port. It is still a shipbuilding center, with the Portsmouth Naval shipyard a major submarine base to service the U.S. nuclear Polaris fleet; established in 1800, the shipyard (one of four publicly-owned shipyards remaining in the nation) is the oldest naval shipyard continuously operated in the U.S.; tours of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Command Museum are available by appointment. Also of interest are the Historical & Naval Museum, the Ft. McClary Memorial blockhouse, and Fort Foster. Bargain hunters will find a number of factory outlet shops.
