An artists' colony with three miles of wide, sandy beaches, Ogunquit is noted for its many galleries, boutiques and fine restaurants, and the serene beauty of its natural setting. You can shop at Perkins Cove, loll about on the sand dunes, and enjoy a mile-long stroll along rocky cliffs on the ancient Indian trail, Marginal Way. The Ogunquit Museum of American Art (reopens: July 1, 2006) enjoys a commanding view of the sea from its sculpture garden and houses works by such important 20th century artists as Edward Hopper, Charles Demuth, and Charles Burchfield. You can also take in a performance at the Ogunquit Playhouse, one of the nation's oldest summerstock theatres.
