A former center of the shipbuilding industry, Searsport on Penobscot Bay is best known for the excellent Penobscot Marine Museum. In the museum's 10 historic buildings is an extensive collection of old log books, charts, ship models, paintings, early navigational instruments, and other mementos of the seafaring life. The legacy of the dozens of ship captains who called Searsport home can be seen in the many older homes found throughout the town. Nearby, Fort Point, Moose Point, and Swan Lake state parks provide ample opportunities for freshwater and saltwater fishing.
