The quaint community of South Berwick, founded in 1630, retains much of the Colonial charm that has been its hallmark for over 350 years. Among the town's architectural splendors are the Sarah Orne Jewett House (1774), where the famed novelist spent most of her life, and Hamilton House (1785), a Georgian mansion overlooking the Salmon Falls River. Both are open for tours. You can also visit the Counting House, an historic commercial structure operated by the Old Berwick Historical Society, featuring an exhibit of navigational and shipbuilding tools.
