Both commercially crowded and historically quaint, The Yorks (which include York Beach, York Village, York Harbor, and Cape Neddick) epitomize the resort communities of the southeast coast of Maine. On popular York Beach you'll find a carousel, arcades, and Maine's largest zoo with Rewa, the state's only white Bengal tiger, as well as family rides and picnic grounds. In York Village, or Old York as it is also called, the Old York Historical Society offers tours of seven buildings including the Old Gaol (1719-the oldest jail in America), once the King's prison for the Province of Maine, the Old Schoolhouse (1745), Jeffards Tavern, and the Elizabeth Perkins House (ca. 1730), which displays the Perkins family's original furnishings. A trip to the tip of Cape Neddick will reward you with a spectacular view of the ocean and the charming Nubble Light (1879) with its adjoining Victorian keeper's cottage sitting together on a tiny offshore island. There are hiking and bike trails on Mount Agamenticus, where you'll have a view of the ocean from the porch of the lodge on a clear day.
