Guarding the St. John River and the northernmost border between Maine and New Brunswick, Fort Kent stands as a remnant of the Aroostook War, an ancient dispute between the United States and Canada. The wooden Fort Kent Blockhouse was constructed in 1839 to protect against Canadian invasion. You can visit the Blockhouse and the Historical Society Museum and Gardens located in the former stationhouse of the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad. The St. John Valley is a center for Acadian culture, and you'll find French being spoken here as commonly as English. Nearby, the Allagash Wilderness Waterway winds through 92 miles of rugged Maine backwoods country.
