The locks here lift boats onto the Cheboygan River at the beginning of a 38-mile route that cuts through some of the state's largest lakes on its way to Conway on Lake Michigan. Today, the historic inland waterway is used mostly by pleasure craft. Mullet and Burt lakes along the way are valued for their muskellunge and bass fishing. Cheboygan's beautifully restored Opera House (1877) presented many famous stars in the past and once again offers opera, ballet, symphony concerts, and touring pop performers. The Cheboygan County Historical Museum in the old sheriff's home and jail offers displays of period furnishings, logging and marine exhibits, and other historic artifacts. The harbor is the home of the icebreaker Mackinac which welcomes visitors when it is in port.
