Once a port for the copper mining industry, this northernmost Michigan village is a center of outdoor recreation and jumping off point for ferries leaving for Isle Royale National Park. Numerous ship wrecks in and near the harbor attest to the dangers of these waters and provide exciting opportunities for divers. Near the village, you'll find Fort Wilkins, built to protect mining interests in 1844 and abandoned in 1870. It has been fully restored with costumed interpreters enacting fort life in the mid-19th century. The state park also offers camping, fishing, and hiking trails.A few miles to the southwest, you can visit the Delaware Copper Mine, where forty-minute walking tours reveal the inner workings of a 19th-century copper mine.
