The introduction of big-time gaming has expanded Detroit's nightlife
options considerably. Each of the three downtown casinos -- Greektown, MGM
Grand, and MotorCity -- features live music nightly from local performers.
And with a music scene as rich as Motown's, you know these locals are
bringing the quality. Sophisticated dining accompanied by
sophisticated jazz has also returned to Detroit in a big way. In Greektown,
Sweet Georgia Brown offers an upscale menu in classy surroundings plus local
and nationally known jazz players Tuesday through Saturday nights. Over on
the river, Seldom Blues gets top marks as the city's finest jazz and dining
spot. Located in the Renaissance Center, the supper club serves a
Continental/French menu while smooth jazz stylings satisfy the ear Wednesday
through Sunday.
And that's not all. Flood's Bar and Grill downtown is highly regarded for
its hip atmosphere, soul food, and live rhythm and blues played seven nights
a week.
For Latin flavor, try the authentic Mexican food at Los Galanes. On
Saturdays, they have live Mexican music downstairs with a deejay spinning
tunes upstairs.
The art-deco movie palaces lining Woodward Avenue in the city's cultural
district still draw hugh crowds but these days its for national rock and pop
music performers. The Majestic Theatre is known for major concerts in the
main venue as well as on its smaller stage, the Magic Stick, which true to
its name is a billiard parlor with 10 pool tables, plus its rock and bowling
venue, the Garden Bowl. A few blocks away, the beautifully restored Fox
Theater is another premiere concert venue, and the nearby State Theater
hosts rock, alternative, and R&B concerts and then turns into a high-energy
dance club on Saturday nights.
The indy rock scene is well represented too. Check out Saint Andrew's
Hall for local music and the occasional nationally known band. In Pontiac,
the eclectic Clutch Cargo's offers many dance options (live bands plus
deejays spinning house, techno pop, and the rest) on the many levels at its
former-church space.
You'll have to head to the suburbs to get a good laugh. Second City
Detroit is found in Novi where the troup serves up its patented brand of
parody, political satire, and improv. Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal
Oak features national headliners and gives local talent a chance to hone
their acts during Wednesday's open-mic night.
