Frankfort's natural harbor and miles of sandy beach make this a popular recreational destination for boaters, swimmers, and fishermen. Numerous charter boats line the harbor, ready to take you onto Lake Michigan for salmon, lake trout, steelhead, brown trout, and walleye. Near Betsie Bay, you'll see a marker indicating the spot where many believe Jesuit explorer and missionary Jacques Marquette died in 1675. Frankfort is the southern gateway to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The nearby salmon weir on the Platte River fascinates autumn visitors. Salmon introduced here now leap up the foaming waters by the millions as they return to spawn. To the southeast, year-round Crystal Mountain Resort offers cross-country and downhill skiing in winter, and golf, tennis, and mountain biking in summer. The Betsie Valley bike trail is 27 miles long. There is a beach-to-beach trail under construction (ready in 2007).
