At 3,300 feet above sea level, Gaylord occupies one of the highest points on Michigan's Lower Peninsula. This "Alpine Village" offers year-round fishing, championship golf courses, skiing, and snowmobiling. Swiss architecture dominates the downtown and the alpine feel is further propagated by the 150 inches of snow that falls here annually. Alpenfest is held in July. When you're not out on the trails, you can visit the Call of the Wild Museum. The facility offers a wide range of exhibits including a 150-animal wildlife display, a miniature golf course, and go-cart track. You can also visit the Pigeon River Country State Forest near Vanderbilt where a herd of over 1,000 elk roams. It is the largest free-roaming elk herd east of the Mississippi. There are a number of special viewing stands. Aspen Park, 1.7 miles of paved paths where you can walk, bike, rollerblade, and view wildlife from special viewing areas.
