Grand Rapids has a variety of nightlife options, especially on the
weekends. In the heart of downtown, The B.O.B. (Big Old Building, for long)
is a multifaceted entertainment center with restaurants, lounges, dance
clubs, and Dr. Grins, a national-circuit comedy club, where some of the best
stand-up talent can be seen on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
If you're a fan of alternative rock, you won't want to miss The
Intersection. This long-lived club has seen a number of incarnations but it
still features the best in local and national acts. Heavy-metal, punk and
thrash dominates at Juke's Bar, but you might hear more bluesy or world beat
sounds there too. For all blues, all the time, check out Billy's; it's been
called the best blues club in the Michigan west. McFadden's Restaurant &
Saloon brings best-selling rock artists to its intimate Pearl Room for
concerts on Sunday nights. Country-rock is played live by top local
performers Thursday through Saturday nights at the Log Cabin.
Four Friends Coffeehouse, a cybercafe where you can surf the net as you
sip your latte, features live folk and acoustic jazz on Friday and Saturday
nights. The similarly named Frenz Coffee House supports the local arts with
locally made paintings on the walls and the occasional folk singer on the
stage. Fenian's Irish Pub toasts the auld sod with live traditional music
every Wednesday. Those interested in a quiet drink and a pleasant view
of the Grand River should drop into the bar at Charley's Crab Restaurant.
You can sample their excellent seafood while relishing a riverside cocktail.
Beer connoisseurs will want to visit the Grand Rapids Brewing Company, the
city's flagship brewpub. Decorated in fine turn-of-the-century style, the
bar offers several varieties of their own brew. For the latest
information on what's happening after dark in Grand Rapids, check the
entertainment section of The Grand Rapids Press.
