Copper first drew miners to this town and its sister city of Houghton. The two now stand guard over the Keweenaw Waterway cutting through the Keweenaw Peninsula. Bilingual street signs (English/Finnish) recall Hancock's Finnish heritage as does the Finnish-American-founded Finlandia University. You can explore the area's mining history at the Seaman Mineral Museum on the campus of Michigan Technological University in Houghton and view the huge and powerful Quincy Mine Hoist north of Hancock where mine tours are also offered.
Houghton is the mainland base for the remote wilderness area of the Isle Royal National Park. Ferry service to the park leaves from the waterfront in Houghton.
