Founded in 1879 following the discovery of the metal for which it was named, Iron Mountain remained an active mining center into the 1940s. Today, it is a recreational center and winter sports capital, while also being a four-season destination. You can visit several historic mining facilities. The Iron Mountain Iron Mine offers tours where you can view modern mining machinery in operation. You can also see the huge steam-driven pumping engine at the Cornish Pumping Engine and Mining Museum. Exhibits on the development of the area at the Menominee Range Historical Foundation Museum include a Victorian parlor, kitchen, and general store.
Pine Mountain Ski Area hosts its annual ski jumping contest in February. There are many recreational trails and waterfalls to enjoy in Iron Mountain.
