This busy industrial center was the first city in the country to develop a permanent pedestrian mall in its business district. There are traveling exhibits at its Public Museum and the Kalamazoo Institute of Art, as well as a terrific permanent collection. One of Kalamazoo's newer attractions is the Flights of Fancy at the Air Zoo. Sixty-five aircraft are on display, including WWII planes such as four Grumman Cats, a Flying Tiger, the Gooney Bird, and a SR-71B Blackbird spy plane. Activities include flight-related rides, flight simulators, theaters, and interactive displays. Each year the Michigan Wine and Harvest Festival, held at Paw Paw, includes wine tasting, tours, parade, grape-stomping, and entertainment.
Visitors to the Kalamazoo area find many golf courses, three ski resorts, four wineries, and more than 80 lakes with public access.
