The great Soo Locks on the St. Mary's Falls Ship Canal can be viewed from observation towers or from sight-seeing boats, which pass through them. Four parallel locks lift giant freighters 21 feet. The Tower of History is a 210-foot-high observation tower offering a panoramic view of the locks and St. Mary's River.
The River of History Museum is open to the public, and there are a number of other historical exhibits in the area. The SS Valley Camp Maritime Museum is a retired Great Lakes freighter converted into a museum. You can view the captain's quarters, the pilothouse, a Marine Hall of Fame, and many other exhibits. Historic buildings include the residence of pioneer Bishop Baraga and the dwelling of Henry R. Schoolcraft, the first Native American agent in the region.
The John Johnston Home (next to the Schoolcraft home) is former home of an Irish fur trader who married a local chief's daughter. Established in 1793, the substantial log home was furnished in grand style. You can tour the home guided by an interpretive guide (who impersonates Johnston and tells stories from his life). (The Baraga and Schoolcraft homes are being renovated and not available for touring). Sault Ste. Marie is Michigan's oldest city (1668).
