Located along the two arms of Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse City is the recreational and cultural hub of Michigan's northwest lower peninsula. Six public beaches, miles of hiking and cycling trails, and the 300-acre Grand Traverse Commons recreational preserve draw boaters, fishermen and beachcombers in summer, while skiers and snowmobilers flock here in winter. A mild climate has made the area a center for fruit-growing and winemaking. The pedestrain-friendly downtown has been restored to its late 19th-century appearance and features boutiques, galleries and restaurants. Victorian mansions evoke a time of vanished elegance. Home of the Dennos Museum Center and the Old Town Playhouse, the city hosts the National Cherry Festival in July, a film festival in August, and the Epicurean Classic in September.
