Statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe, the Blue Ox, welcome visitors to this beautiful resort area. At Lake Bemidji State Park you can camp, hike, fish, boat, and explore a bog area of orchids, mosses, and insectivorous plants on boardwalk trails. For interactive displays of local and natural history, visit the Headwaters Science Center and the Historical Museum. At the Bemidji Arts Center on the Bemidji State University campus, take in paintings, sculpture, music, and drama. The Paul Bunyan Playhouse in downtown Bemidji is another theater in the area. The Paul Bunyan Recreation Trail to Brainerd is a 100-mile-long, multi-use trail linking 16 communities. The Palace Casino, a tribal casino, lies 15 minutes east in Cass Lake. Many powwows held in the area are open to the public; only on Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and weekends.
