Ely is the central gateway to the unspoiled voyageur country of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). This chain of lakes separating Minnesota and Ontario was used by fur traders and French explorers to penetrate deep into the interior of North America. Today's modern explorers canoe into the wilds to camp and fish, or take advantage of the wilderness facilities offered by area resorts.
You can visit the International Wolf Center, which is dedicated to the preservation of the area's wolves. In addition to exhibits on modern wolf tracking techniques, you can observe a wolf pack that roams a forest habitat. The Vermilion Interpretive Center has Ojibwe Indian artifacts, as well as mining, forestry, and fur trading displays. The Dorothy Molter Museum celebrates the life of the famous "root beer lady," who lived on Knife Lake as the last resident of the BWCAW.
