The seat of Rice County was established in 1826 when Alexander Faribault built a large fur-trading post here near the Cannon and Straight rivers. Today the town is known as the headquarters of the Faribault Woolen Mills, makers of woolen blankets since 1865. You can tour the mill and visit the Faribault House, constructed for the town's founder in 1853; it is one of the oldest existing buildings in the state.
The grounds of the Rice County Historical Society Museum include a log cabin, a one-room schoolhouse, and the Episcopal Church built in 1869. The Episcopal Cathedral, built by Bishop Henry Whipple, is notable for its stained-glass windows which recall the efforts Whipple made to see that the Sioux Indians received fair treatment.
