Grand Marais, the seat of Cook County, is both a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and a thriving artists colony with numerous studios and galleries. The town is the starting point for the Gunflint Trail that winds through Superior National Forest and into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Area lodges offer hiking, fishing and camping during the summer, and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dogsledding, and snowmobiling in winter. Among the towns several galleries and studios, the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery exhibits major regional and local artists throughout the year. The town's annual Arts Festival is held in July. You can also try your hand at searching for agates along the Lake Superior shoreline.
