Founded as a lumbering town, Hibbing turned to mining when iron ore was discovered under the city. The discovery led to the town being moved two miles to the south, a move which gave rise to the Greyhound Bus Company.
Observation points overlook the Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine (535 feet deep, 3.25 miles long, and two miles wide), a pit so huge it has been called the Grand Canyon of Minnesota. More than a billion tons of ore have been removed from the site. You can also visit the Paulucci Space Theatre which incorporates star projectors and films in its presentations. The Greyhound Museum has displays of historic buses and an exhibit on the birth of the famous transportation company.
Hibbing is Bob Dylan's hometown. Dylan Days celebrates his birthday and the arts. since 2002, Dylan Days has grown from a small celebration at a Hibbing restaurant to a city-wide event that has drawn attention from all over the world.
