A border town overlooking the Rainy River and the western shore of Rainy Lake, the seat of Koochiching County is the gateway to Voyageurs National Park. Narrated boat tours of the park lasting from two to seven hours leave from the visitors center on Rainy Lake and take in such sites as old mining operations, logging camps, and cormorant nesting grounds.
Smokey Bear Park has a 26-foot statue of the familiar firefighting figure. International Falls is legendary for being one of the "coolest places" in the United States; its nickname is Frostbite Falls. Tour the Boise Paper Solutions Mill, home of the second fastest papermaking machine in the world.
Rainy Lake is a world-class fishery, 212,000 acres with 929 miles of shoreline and 1,600 islands.
In Smokey Bear Park, visit Kooching County Historical Museum (with 10,000 years of Borderlands history) and Bronko Nagurski Museum (a tribute to the early days of the NFL).
