Located where the Minnesota River swings sharply from its southeasterly course to a flow almost due north, Mankato is the main commercial, cultural, and educational center of south central Minnesota. The city is the seat of Blue Earth County, a name referring to the color of the clay found along the Blue Earth River. You can uncover the town's Victorian past at Hubbard House (1871); the 18-room mansion features a carriage house with vintage vehicles, a Victorian garden, and decorative features such as silk wallpaper.
Other interesting stops include the Heritage Center Museum, the Good Counsel Romanesque chapel, the waterfalls and 1864 gristmill at Minneopa State Park, and the gardens in Sibley Park.
