This tiny historic town, the seat of Dodge County, is another of those towns that have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in its entirety. The town's heyday was from its founding in 1854 to about 1899. It has pretty much remained unchanged since then. You can take a walking tour of the four-block historic district of a dozen buildings which include a dance hall, courthouse, opera house, church, post office, grocery, sheriff's office, and Victorian mansions. The Mantorville Theatre offers old-fashioned melodramas where booing the villain and cheering the hero is definitely encouraged. The Dodge County Historical Museum and Restoration House have exhibits of local history portraying life in the 19th century.
