This sister city to Fargo, North Dakota, is the seat of Clay County and the home of Minnesota State University Moorhead. You can visit Comstock House (1882), the home of college founder, Solomon Comstock; the mansion has been restored in the High Victorian manner and contains many original furnishings. The Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center houses the Hjemkomst0 , a replica Viking ship that sailed to Norway in 1982 and the Hopperstad Stave Church, a full-scale replica of a church in Vik, Norway, with hand carvings in cedar, redwood, and pine. Nearby, the Clay County Historical Society recounts local history through displays on the pioneers and the coming of the railroad.
The Plains Art Museum, now housed across the river in Fargo, has an excellent collection of Native American, West African, and contemporary American art. In Moorhead, you can also visit the Rourke Art Gallery and Rourke Art Museum.
