The 2000 Census officially named New Ulm "the most German town in the U.S." Founded by immigrants from Wurttemberg in 1854, New Ulm has a distinctly European feel. Its wide streets, classic architecture, and overwhelming proportion of German-flavored restaurants and stores all celebrate the heritage of Germany. The town's standout attractions include the Glockenspiel, a clock tower and carillon with animated historical figures, and Hermann's Monument, a memorial to the Teutonic hero with a commanding view of the surrounding countryside. You can also tour the August Schell Brewery and visit the brewery's gardens and deer park. Flandrau State Park offers swimming, fishing, camping, and hiking, and miles of nature trails along the Cottonwood River. Internationally renowned artist and author of childrens books ("Millions of Cats"), Wanda Gag was born in New Ulm in 1893. Her family home has been restored and is open to the public.
