Most famous to history buffs as the site of a disastrous James-Younger gang raid, Northfield is also the home of St. Olaf's College, famous for its choirs, and Carleton College, a nationally noted liberal arts school. Displays at the Northfield Historical Museum retell the last bank robbery attempted by Jesse James and Cole Younger on September 7, 1867. Two gunmen and three citizens were left lying dead in the wake of their effort to rob the First National Bank. The town celebrates its stand against the outlaws during the annual Defeat of Jesse James Days in September, always held the weekend after Labor Day.
