The capital of Minnesota grew as the head of navigation on the Mississippi. James J. Hill Mansion recalls the days when St. Paul was a railroad and business capital. Today the city is noted for the state Capitol and a thriving downtown with attractions such as Landmark Center with its park-like plaza inhabited by larger-than-life bronze statues of Charlie Brown and his cartoon gang, the Science Museum of Minnesota, Omnitheater, the Museum of Art, and the elegant Ordway Center for Performing Arts. The Minnesota Historical Society has a museum and a reference library. Cathedral of St. Paul, modeled after St. Peter's in Rome, is one of the largest churches in the country. Historic Lowertown, with Galtier Plaza, is a restaurant and arts district. Visit the Children's Museum, and Como Park Zoo and Conservatory with its restored antique carousel, or take a river cruise. Historic Fort Snelling presents 1820s frontier fort life.
